DoD STARBASE Central Florida, located in Orlando’s Research Parkway, specializes in introducing students and their teachers to the wonderful world of Modeling, Simulation and Training (MS&T) to foster workforce development through partnerships with military, industry, government, and academia.

Chris Voltzke

Chris Voltzke moved to Central Florida from Duluth, Minnesota in 2006. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior where he studied biology and political science, graduating with a degree in education.

He joins STARBASE with 20 years of teaching experience, the last 17 with Orange County Public Schools, and has taught all levels of learners from 6th through 12th grade.

Prior to teaching, he was employed in city parks and recreation along with planning and development.

Along with his career, Chris enjoys skiing, cheering for Minnesota sports teams, and spending time with his family.

Alexandra Morffi

Alexandra Morffi is University of Central Florida (UCF) student, a small business entrepreneur, making and selling jewelry, and is the internship coordinator for DoD STARBASE Central Florida (SBCFL). She first joined NCS as an intern in the year 2022 and was quickly promoted to teaching assistant in the DoD STARBASE Central Florida. After six months of proven leadership, she accepted a promotion as internship coordinator at NCS and SBCFL.

Alexandra is a senior majoring in communication sciences and disorders. After earning her undergraduate degree, she plans to continue her studies in the communications sciences and disorders master’s program at UCF with the goal of becoming a speech pathologist. Alexandra is currently a member of National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA). As an ASSLHA member, she’s had the opportunity to work closely with students with disabilities through hands-on experiences, which has driven her success working with students at NCS and the SBCFL lab. Alexandra’s hobbies include spending time with her cat, Lilo, vacationing with her family, and photography.

Abbie Brown

Abbie has worked with students from all grade levels and abilities in traditional classrooms, museum educational programs, and learning labs. During her time at the University of Central Florida, Abbie became a Subject Matter Expert in the use of 3D scanning for innovative educational purposes.

She graduated from the University of Central Florida with her teaching certification, bachelor’s degree in Exceptional Student Education, and a minor in Art History.

Abbie started as the Teaching Assistant for the lab in 2022, and through hard work was promoted to Office Manager in 2023. As Office Manager, she can both support the SBCFL team and educate students of all ages.

Outside of STARBASE, Abbie’s interests include entomology, art history, and spending time with her husband Parks and cat Mitski.

Lana Wallis

Lana Wallis is the Lead Teacher for STARBASE Central Florida. Lana has a Master of Science degree from the University of Florida in Forensic Toxicology.

She began her career in science at Washington State University conducting genetic research in the school of medicine.

After moving back to Florida in 2008, she went through the necessary steps to obtain her professional educator certification for chemistry through the state of Florida.

She has worked as a public and private school science teacher, and has taught physical science, chemistry, environmental science and marine science.

Outside of STARBASE, Lana is a board member for Cancerbank.org and enjoys volunteering in local community events.

Lindsey Spalding

As Director of STEM Programs at the National Center for Simulation (NCS) in Orlando Florida and a PhD candidate at Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) in Melbourne Florida, Lindsey Spalding serves as a networking hub connecting educators, students, community members, and the High-Tech Modeling, Simulation, and Training (MS&T) STEM workforce.

Collaborating with industry experts that span across government, department of defense, academic, and private industry Lindsey works primarily with industry experts and K-14 educators to build and facilitate authentic integrated STEM learning opportunities designed to strengthen STEM teaching and learning practices which leads to stronger STEM students and a future workforce prepared to take on global challenges. Industry accredited certifications are one way for STEM students and practitioners to demonstrate their understanding, and employability in a workforce of interest.

NCS developed a M&S certification program for entry level professionals and is leading a workforce development education committee to engage and prepare high school and technical school teachers to give their students the opportunity to join the high-tech, high paying MS&T workforce.
